Cookin’ Soul just put together a whole mixtape devoted to Michael Jackson, which will probably feature some dumb blends and whatnot. Look, these gimmick mixtapes have got to stop. This mixtape is less about MJ and more about other people getting their names out there as producers.
If I want to remember Michael Jackson’s musical legacy, I’ll listen to Michael Jackson’s music. The real one. I’d much rather dust off Thriller than have to hear lazy, irrelevant blends. I don’t need to be reminded of dude’s greatness songs like “Billie Jean” being chopped up and acapellas of 50 Cent and Lil’ Wayne played over them. That’s not good music and it’s not in good taste. There’s a right way and a wrong way to pay tribute, but putting together a mixtape to capitalize on the publicity you can get is just distasteful. I’m sure it’ll get plenty of run because everyone wants to “pay homage” and let’s face it, it’s a slow Friday and that’d be a great way to end the week, with a free downloadable mixtape that’s brand new, regardless of what’s on it.
If you really want to pay tribute to the man, talk about how great he was, his impact, anything along those lines. Don’t butcher his music by blending it with Kid Cudi. No one needs that bullshit.
And one more thing, remember this – it’s not about you. Michael Jackson just passed away. No one cares how you feel. I saw some celebrities tweets on the subject and most of them were about “I feel…” or “I am…” Look, for five seconds try to remember that it’s not about you. You feel a certain way, great. You can’t be all that distraught though if you’re going to Twitter. If I was as devastated as others are claiming to be, the last thing I would do would be log on to a popular networking site and air out my feelings to the world. Maybe I’m insensitive or just a plain ol’ curmudgeon, but it’d be much better if all these celebrities would shut their twats.
So let’s recap. Two things – no more gimmick mixtapes (this means you, Cookin’ Soul) and no more tweets about how you feel. It’s not about you, it’s about Jacko.
