2011 was a dope year for hip hop so accordingly here are my 10 favorites of the year.

Action Bronson- Dr. Lecter
Action Bronson has had a hell of good year dropping loads of dope verses including on every track of the seriously ill Dr. Lecter. Despite comparisons to Ghostface, Action sounds like no one out there right now with references to fine cuisine, culinary techniques, and professional wrestling, Dr. Lecter is one of those albums you can listen to straight through. The raw and at times quirky production compliment Action’s flow perfectly. Sprinkle with dope guest appearances by the likes of Meyhem Lauren, Shaz Ill York, and Maffew Ragazino, and you have a winner.

The Doppelgangaz- Lone Sharks
Besides being our family here at We Goin’In, The Doppelgangaz are also the most original duo out right now. With unbelievably fantastic boom-bap and moody production and complimentary rhyme styles, Lone Sharks showed off just tight The Doppelgangaz can be. For the record, Nexium might be favorite beat of the year. It is straight up bonkers. If you’re not already up on them, cop this record now!

Cunninlynguists- Oneirology
This album straight up blew my mind (pause.) The production is utterly beautiful and inspired and the rhymes soulful, introspective, and pitch perfect for the beats. An album loosely based around the concept of dreams and dreaming (hence Oneirology, the study of dreams,) The Cunninlynguists provide the perfect content to flush out that concept. It will be criminal if this not on everyone’s end of the year best lists.

Roc Marciano- Marcberg
Perhaps no artist and album captured the aesthetic of true gritty, grimy, gully, and gangster NY rap than Roc Marciano and his Marcberg LP. With minimal and dark sample driven production and Roc’s super ill flow and rhyme schemes, this is another listen straight through album. This brings back the best memories of mid 90′s rap glory but still has a modern sound to keep itself relevant. I’m fiending for some more Roc Marciano music in the 2k12 fo sho.

Phonte- Charity Starts At Home
I am an unabashed Little Brother and Foreign Exchange Stan so of course I loved Phonte’s solo album Charity Starts At Home From the first track. With his patented blend of witty introspective rhymes, ad-libs (New Tigalo New Tigalo!) Phonte delivers the goods on this album. He’s also reunited with 9th wonder on a number of tracks bringing back that good ol Little Brother feeling. Throw in some dope guest spots from the likes of Median, Evidence, Elzhi, and Pharoah Monche, and a good time is guaranteed for all.

Wu-Tang- Legendary Weapons
If there is one thing that people of all races, religions, creeds, and stripes can agree on it’s that The Wu is fantastic! Combining most of the Clan members with hip hop all stars like M.O.P. , AZ, Action Bronson, Termanology, Sean P, and others with affiliates like Trife, Cappadona, and the criminally slept on Killa Sin, Legendary Weapons is pure raw gritty Wu greatness. Dope kung-fu flick samples and raw rhymes with little to no choruses, this is only for the hardcore. Join the elite and cop this album.

Common- The Dreamer, The Believer
Despite being released on December 20th, this album is so good that it easily catapults to the top of the list for the year. Backed by near flawless production by No ID, Common sounds as hungry and versatile as ever switching between cocky bravado and introspective conscious type raps with ease. Even over smooth production Common’s patented off beat flow sounds raw and authentic. Hip hop lives!

Jedi Mind Tricks- Violence Begets Violence
I will admit that Jedi Mind Tricks is a bit of a guilty pleasure in my view. Their albums can be interchangeable but that never stops me from thoroughly enjoying them. Vinny Paz and Jus Allah return minus Stoupe (who surprisingly is not missed) with more songs of ultra-violence with fantastic titles. Jedi Mind Tricks always gets my hyped to go knock random mothafuckas out on the street and for that I am always grateful. As always, the guest spots are great and Violence Begets Violence even features Chip Fu which is just plain fantastic!

Drake- Take Care
I don’t care who hates on me for this because this album is just plain fantastic. I’m of the view that Drake is much less rap music connected to hip hop culture and more very very well executed pop music which is fine by me. Even hardcore OG thugs like myself need a break from shooting and hustling from time to time. Drake’s signature rapping/singing on the same track style is in its full glory and I have no shame in stating that when he wants to spit, Drake can definitely spit. Not only is this album good listening, your girl won’t walk out on you when its playing either (it takes a special woman to get turned on by say Jedi Mind Tricks.) All in all, Drake shows that he definitely has some longevity in this game.

Evidence- Cats and Dogs
Mr. Slow Flow returns with another solidly dope album that shows why he is respected by nearly everyone in hip hop. With guest spots from the likes of Raekwon, Aloe Blacc, Rakaa, Slug, Aesop Rock, and Ras Kass and bonkers production from Ev himself, Alchemist, and Premier this album represents hip hop in it’s purest form. Evidence knows how craft a consistent and unified listening experience which is just a pleasure to listen to. More please!

Upon first listen, Season 2 is clearly full of original production and more complete songs than Connor’s previous mixtape releases. Drake Is For The Kids!

Like a lot of 12 year-olds, Jake Zeldin is a fan of Canadian rapper Drake. But unlike other 12-year-olds, Jake has actually had the chance to rap with him. Impressive enough; but what’s more impressive is what rapping does for Jake.

Jake Zeldin has struggled with a significant stutter all his life. But when he starts to rap, that stutter disappears.

Communicating has been a struggle for Zeldin since he first started to speak. But ask him to rap one of his own written songs, and the sentences and rhymes tumble out easily, one right after the other.

Zeldin’s mom Robyn says her son figured out how rap relaxes him fairly recently.

“He discovered about two years ago that he has this ability – that when he raps he has fluid speech, which is incredible because sometimes it’s a challenge to speak,” she told CTV’s Canada AM Monday.

“Rapping has really helped. He’s incorporated it in with book reports at school and with talking, so it’s amazing for him.”

Robyn says people often don’t know what to make of her son when they first hear him speak. But she says he’s a normal 12-year-old boy; he just has more of a challenge communicating.

Two weeks ago, Jake went with his brother Cole to a concert by rapper Tyga, where Drake and fellow rapper T-Pain were special guests. The brothers decided to see if they could get backstage, where they ran into T-Pain who they had met the previous summer at another concert.

T-Pain gave them a hug and introduced them to Drake. The next thing Jake knew, he was showing off some of his rhymes to one of his idols.

So why is Zeldin able to “speak” easily when he raps?

“I’m not sure, but it’s funner,” Zeldin replies.

He has been in speech therapy since his preschool years, but with none of the therapies working, he and his mother decided to stop for a while.

“We haven’t done any therapy for the last two years. We decided to take a little bit of break. But we may visit it again,” Robyn said.

Stuttering remains largely a mystery to brain researchers. For some reason, most childhood stutterers recover with no help at all, with as many as three-quarters outgrowing the condition.

Some stutterers find they can speak perfectly well in one language but stutter in another. Others find they don’t stutter when they sing, or when they speak to young children. And for still others, the condition clears up when they act on stage and take on a different persona.

While stuttering was once thought to be psychological condition caused by anxiety issues, it’s now recognized as a neurological condition stemming from an as-yet undetermined brain wiring issues.

The long-held suspicion of a genetic link is bearing out: in recent years, a number of genetic mutations involved in stuttering have been identified. But since these mutations account for only about 10 per cent of cases, more still wait to be identified.

Robyn says for now, she and her son are working on using singing and rapping to help Jake communicate. Jake has been writing songs, putting his music and videos online under the stage name “Lil Jz,” and dreaming of becoming a professional rapper.

Why rapping helps, his mother Robyn doesn’t know. But she says they’re going to use it as best they can.

“He has this gift; he has a different way to communicate. I think it’s amazing and we’re just going to try to keep it up.”

Action Bronson Continues To Cook Up That Hottness

“Speaking by phone from iconic Left Coast producer the Alchemist’s Los Angeles home, Queens, NY-bred rapper Action Bronson—one of 2011’s most unanimously embraced emerging underground hip hop acts—is quite audibly miles from home.

“I’m just lampin’ right now on the beach, smokin’ a joint,” he says breezily. “It’s beautiful over here, it’s like 70. It’s prime weather. In New York, it’s fuckin’ snowing right now, I just heard.”

True to his name, though, he’s not on holiday down there.

“I’m not even sure what day it is. I’m locked in right now, I’m locked the fuck in on some music shit. Being at this guy’s house is some next shit. It’s just like, wake up, eat, rap, sleep, shit, rap, you know? The wind (here) hits you differently. You inhale different. It’s like a load is off, you’re so laid back, you can just work.”

His first album, Dr. Lecter, is one of the most talked-about rap records of the year, with his love for hip hop, haute cuisine, ladies and ganja being the order of the day.

A chef by trade, Bronson—who only began rhyming three years back—now complements a lifetime in the kitchens of NYC with this promising new career path. A collabo record with Boston production maven Statik Selektah drops mid-month, while the Alchemist project is nearly complete. Globe-trotting is, as a result, his newfound passion.

“It’s an amazing thing. If anything comes from this rap, I can just travel the world. Like, I really don’t give a fuck, ’cause I can do other things, but travelling the world is something that is obviously great if someone pays for it, and fucking pays you to come there. That’s the most important to me. I’ve been outta the country before but not like this.”

Son of an Albanian ex-pat father and a “Brooklyn Jew” mom, Bronson’s sound was forged in hip hop’s front yard, but he doesn’t pay much mind to the new stuff, other than to mention New York’s upcoming talent with a nod of respect.

“I listen to the same shit that I been listening to since the 90s. No new albums have really come out that, like, hit me. Actually, I haven’t bought an album in years. The last one I bought was the second Raekwon album, the Purple Tape, Part Two.”

Much has been made of Bronson’s knack for referencing fine foods in rhyme, but he assures would-be listeners that the buzz he creates is no mere gimmick, offering a live show as his piece de resistance.

“I’m actually most comfortable on stage. My breath is perfect,” says the mic phenom. “I don’t usually rhyme with a hype man or anything like that. I just let everyone hear it raw. The shit is impeccable. I pride myself on the show. If I don’t put on a good show, I’m upset at myself.

“I’d rather be somewhere fuckin’ serving a guy some beautiful cuisine,” he admits. “But the rapping skills, they precede themselves, and the cooking skills do the same thing. So it’s not a gimmick.”

“And you know, if you don’t like it, I dunno what to tell you. You wanna fuckin’ challenge me to an Iron Chef match, you can do that.”

Talib Kweli Keeps It Revolutionary

Hip-hop star Talib Kweli says his first visit to Occupy Wall Street won’t be his last.

The Brooklyn rapper loaned his lyrics to the cause last week when he performed a song off a new unreleased solo album at Zuccotti Park.

“I’m not aligned with everyone politically who is there,” he told the Daily News. “But I was overwhelmed by seeing democracy in action.

“You have to see how dedicated these people are to creating social awareness and creating a platform for us to talk about issues … disparities in our country.”

Kweli, 36, was on the road with Mos Def – his former partner in the acclaimed duo Black Star – when the activists began their sit-in against financial inequity.

He read about it on Twitter first, started hearing about other artists visiting the protesters and decided to go himself.

“Now this is the New York City I love,” he tweeted as he pulled up last week.

Kweli grew up in Park Slope until he was 11 and then Flatbush. He went to Brooklyn Technical High School before his parents, both college professors, sent him to boarding school in Connecticut.

His brother, Jamal Greene, is a Harvard- and Yale-educated constitutional law professor at Columbia who clerked for a Supreme Court justice – after a stint as a Sports Illustrated reporter.

Kweli, who lives in Park Slope, said he hopes he can use his fame to bring more attention to the protesters.

He thought about making a video for the song he performed, “Distraction,” but is worried it might look like he’s using their cause to promote his work.

The song was written a year ago and contains references to corporate greed and the Arab Spring revolutions.

He said he’ll be keeping tabs on the movement and sending out updates to his 370,000 Twitter followers. Another visit to Zuccotti Park seems likely.

“I’m positive I’ll go back,” he said.
